NIGERIAN YOUTH ORGANIZATION OF BOSTON, INC. HOSTS 16TH ANNUAL COOKOUT
Free event features food, performances, soccer tournament & fun, family-friendly activities
Boston, MA (June 29, 2011) — On Saturday, July 9th, Nigerian Youth Organization of Boston, Inc. will host its 16th annual cookout, an afternoon of food, fun and family-friendly activities to raise funds to support the organization’s work to educate and empower Boston’s Nigerian and Nigerian-American youth. The cookout takes place from 12 noon to 6 PM in the Franklin Park Playstead, 1 Franklin Park Road, Dorchester, MA. The event is free and open to the public.
For the first time in the event’s nearly two-decade history, this year’s cookout will feature the first annual co-ed NYO soccer tournament, sponsored in part by the Africa Soccer Summer Tournament. The cookout also features live entertainment from Boston’s hottest Nigerian sound system DJ Kobe, King Ilabash & Royal Connection Band, African soul songstress Offiong Bassey, Naija artist EMX, Nigerian hip hopper Doggext, and the NYO Dance Troupe. Nigerian-American writer/actress Obehi Janice, whose one-woman show “Fufu and Oreos” has been lauded by critics and audiences alike, will serve as event host.
NYO Inc.’s annual cookout brings together Boston’s Nigerian community in a show of solidarity for the organization’s efforts to equip Nigerian youth with the knowledge, skills and resources they need to positively impact both Nigerian and American society. The event is also an opportunity for those interested in learning more about the organization to fellowship with NYO members and supporters as they raise funds to fuel the organization’s work.
Donations received before, during and after the cookout help to support NYO’s programs and services, which include GED and SAT prep classes and homework help, field trips and sports activities, and music and arts workshops. Those interested in contributing can visit NYO’s website, www.nyoboston.org, to give a donation and learn more about the organization.
